How long do things stay fresh? [Archive]

I have never bought that far in advance for things like granola bars and cereal. How long do they stay fresh in the package (for cereal never opened)? There are only 2 adults and a soon-to-be 1-year-old in my house so we don't go through large amounts of food, but it's nice to have the back-ups ready. Oh, and fruit snacks or chips --- those are the other things I used to just buy when I needed them.

What are some other tricks you've learned about keeping food fresh -- other than the foodsaver?

read the product expiry date. you'll find most things like granola bars , fruit snacks, cake mixes etc generally are at least 1 year out. I write on the box in black marker the expiry date and rotate my stock.
